But within a few years he had fallen in love with nephrology and made that his career goal; he found irresistible its blend of intellectual challenge, complex clinical medicine, and long term holistic care.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"x_elementToProof\"\u003eAfter training in nephrology in Bristol, Leicester and Manchester he was appointed consultant nephrologist in Leicester in 1988, and then honorary professor of renal medicine in 1999. He worked in Leicester until he retired from the NHS in 2015. John’s research career was helped on its way by several tranches of funding from Kidney Research UK. He became a trustee of the charity in 2014 and then chair of the trustees (2015-18).
